NIMS Course Requirements

Measurement, Materials, & Safety

This course is designed for those with limited background in machining. The course introduces the student to basic understanding of workplace skills, safety, measurement, math, quality, metals, maintenance, drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T), layout, hand tools. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Measurement, Materials, & Safety Credential.

Job Planning, Benchwork, & Layout

This Course develops the student’s ability to read and understand design drawings. Students develop the ability to interpret symbols, notations, and GD&T information. The student will then use this information to produce finished products in the laboratory using layout methods, hand tools, saws, and basic hole making operations. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Job Planning, Benchwork, & Layout Credential.

CNC Mill Operator

This course prepares the student for operation of a CNC Mill. In addition to reinforcing the skills from the previous courses, the student will develop the skills necessary to set up and operate a CNC Mill. Students will learn about machine maintenance and safety, machining operations and applications, cutting tool selection and assembly, and aspects programming the CNC Mill for production. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS CNC Mill Operator Credential.

CNC Lathe Operator

This course prepares the student for operation of a CNC Lathe. Students will develop the skills necessary to set up and operate a CNC Lathe. Students will learn about machine maintenance and safety, machining operations and applications, cutting tool selection and assembly, and aspects programming the CNC Mill for production. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS CNC Lathe Operator Credential.

Milling: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 1

This course is designed for those with some basic G-code programming for the CNC mill, in addition to setup and operations experience. Students should also have a basic understanding of workplace skills, safety, measurement, math, quality, metals, maintenance, drawings, including GD&T, layout, CNC basics, CNC mill setup and operation. In this course students will develop their coding capabilities along with their understanding of tolerancing and inspection, process adjustment and improvement and decision making and problem solving. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training include CNC mill setup, programming and operation.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Milling: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 1 Credential.

Milling: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 2

This course is designed for students that have earned the NIMS CNC Milling: Programming, Setup & Operations Level 1 Credential. The course work includes higher level CNC programming of milling operations for more complicated parts, interpreting and understanding advanced engineering drawings, and more involved mathematics. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Milling: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 2 Credential.

Turning: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 1

This course is designed for those with some basic G-code programming for the CNC lathe, in addition to setup and operations experience. Students should also have a basic understanding of workplace skills, safety, measurement, math, quality, metals, maintenance, drawings, including GD&T, layout, CNC basics, CNC lathe setup and operation. In this course students will develop their coding capabilities along with their understanding of tolerancing and inspection, process adjustment and improvement and decision making and problem solving. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training include CNC lathe setup, programming and operation.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Turning: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 1 Credential.

Turning: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 2

This course is designed for students that have earned the NIMS CNC Turning: Programming, Setup & Operations Level 1 Credential. The course work includes higher level CNC programming of milling operations for more complicated parts, interpreting and understanding advanced engineering drawings, and more involved mathematics. The skills covered in the Immerse2Learn online training reinforce the classroom and laboratory instruction.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Turning: Programming, Setup and Operations Level 2 Credential.

NIMS Optional Credentials

Manual Drilling Level 1

Students completing the Manual Drilling 1 course will demonstrate the ability to interpret a part print, and using hand and precision cutting tools as well as access to a drill press and its
accessories, produce a part matching the process plan and the blueprint specifications. Each hole must have at least two secondary operations. The student will demonstrate secondary operations consisting of reaming, spot facing, countersinking, counterboring, and counter drilling as part of the part production. Students will be capable of correctly laying out the part from the drawings using hand tools and calculating the appropriate speeds and feeds to properly produce the part.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Manual Drilling 1 Credential.

Surface Grinding Level 1

Students completing the Surface Grinding 1 course will demonstrate the ability to interpret a part print and using hand and precision tools, and choice of a grinding wheels, as well as access to a surface grinder and its accessories produce a part to specified dimensions and finishes. Students will demonstrate the capability to dress the wheel, produce a part matching the print specifications using appropriate trade techniques. The part specified will be in the semi-finished state having been squared up and milled. Finishing the part will require the precision finishing of the six faces of the block to tolerances common to precision grinding for squareness, size, and surface finish characteristics.

Successful completion of this course allows the student to test for the NIMS Surface Grinding 1 Credential.

Mastercam Mill Design and Toolpaths

Through the Immerse2Learn online learning program students complete the “Mastercam U” Mill Design & Toolpaths course. The program provides training that exceeds the minimum requirements for the first level of Mastercam Certification as defined by the Mastercam Certification Advisory Committee. This course is the baseline Mastercam training at both major manufacturing companies and colleges throughout the United States.
